Baseball Defensive Plays: Base Hit to Right with Bases Empty

In baseball and softball, all nine fielders have defined responsibilities and need to move on every play.

Base hit to right field with bases empty, the play goes to second.  

Base Hit to RF with Bases Empty

Play:

Situation: Bases empty
Offense: Base hit to right field
Defense: Play goes to second base

Player Responsibilities:

Pitcher: Back up cutoff man (2B)
Catcher: Move to back up position between third and home
1st base: Check that the runner touches first base and cover first base
2nd base: Moves into outfield to cutoff throw to second base
3rd base: Covers third base
Shortstop: Covers second base and receive throw from cutoff man (2B) or right fielder
Left: Back up second base
Center: Back up right field
Right: Fields the ball and throws to second base (or cutoff, if the ball is hit deep)
Note: The throw to the cutoff man only if necessary, otherwise throw directly to second base
