Summary
Sequential Learners
The sequential learning style is not as well recognized as the auditory, visual, or kinesthetic learning style, but many very talented athletes are sequential learners. Sequential learners ask the "why?" question. Sequential learners tend to gain understanding in linear steps, with each step following logically from the previous one and tend to follow logical stepwise paths in finding solutions. Sequential learners may not fully understand the activity but they can nevertheless do it since the pieces they have absorbed are logically connected.
Common phrases used are:
- That is logical
- We can work it out
Common actions used are:
- Process and rule followers
- Play strategy games like chess or probability games like poker
Coaching sequential learners:
The key to coaching sequential learners is to create as many logical connections between activities and events as possible so this athlete can creatively pull together incredible actions that the coach never thought was possible.
When coaching sequential learner, you need to reiterate the motivation and the conditions under which to act throughout the learning process. When verbally explaining the activity for the auditory learners tell them why it is important and when it happens. When visually demonstrating what needs to be done, ask the players why it is important. After the team has physically engaged in the learning process, ask them why they are doing and under what conditions does this happen.
